First Responders Provided $34.6 Million for Equipment and Training
March 27, 2007 — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today the award of $34.6 million in equipment and training to first responders across the nation as a part of the fiscal year 2006 Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). DHS awarded more than 2,000 direct assistance grants to ensure that law enforcement and emergency responders receive specialized equipment and training to meet their homeland security mission.

WASHINGTON — Support for first responders — police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel — has emerged as a contentious political issue, with both parties claiming they are working to help the nation's first line of defenders.
But municipal officials say despite their best efforts, the cash intended to help these groups is getting caught up in bureaucratic red tape.
Cities and municipal divisions like fire and police departments must apply for much of the money, usually through state government, and local authorities say the routine has been less than smooth.
